From the Holman transcriptions . . . The last relative of the Slocombs to be buried here was Samuel James Slocomb. Mr. Slocomb came to Texas shortly after the Civil War on the way to Mexico with a group of other veterans. He stopped at the Phillips Hotel where the widowed caretaker Nancy Smith Phillips was. Deciding to stay in the area, Samuel bought land in 1871 and he and Nancy married in 1873. He was a land speculator and a contractor and he built some bridges in the county. Nancy is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
