San Joaquin County
John Henry Webster was orphaned July 1, 1858 when his mother died. His father had died in 1853. John and Eliza Perry, who ran the hotel in Murphys, CA, took him in and raised him. On reaching adulthood he left Murphys for Arizona where he worked as a railroad engineer but returned to Murphys a few years before his death. His health had been failing and he was on the way to Santa Cruz when his heart failed and he died in Stockton at the age of 59.
His body was returned to Murphys, and he was buried under a large oak tree on the Adams Ranch where his parents had been buried over 50 years earlier.
At one time there were many graves in that area, but a ranch foreman had pulled up the wooden markers and thrown them in the creek so the cattle would have more grazing room.
