Gerald Dupree Pierce was born at home 26 May 1912, Wilkinson Co., Stephensville, Ga. Gerald was the youngest of seven children. Gerald's mother, Valeria Jane Stanley Pierce died of Breast Cancer 7 March 1923. {Dad was 10 years old at the time his mother died.} The funeral services were held in Mrs. R. Stanley Private Family Graveyard at Big Sandy Baptist Church by Rev. John Edgar Townsend. Dad told me that at the time he did not know what was going on. He was playing on a pile of dirt beside a hole in the ground with Forrest & James Townsend. (Rev. John Edgar Townsend's sons.) They put a box in the hole and put the dirt on the box in the hole. {Dad said that he did not know that his mother was in the box.}
After the funeral for Gerald's mother, Valeria Jane Stanley Pierce on 8 March 1923, Gerald's father, Ira Edgar Pierce, told Gerald that he was going to go on the river, and that he was to stay with Cousin Allen Dixon. He was to work on the farm to earn his keep. That Ira would be back to get him. Dad found out later that his Dad did not go on the river.
Dad worked and lived with the Dixon's for over two years. It was on a Friday in April 1925, when Gerald was in a field plowing that he saw Ira walking down the road. When he came in from plowing that night Cousin Allen told Gerald that his Dad, Ira, had stopped by and asked for any pay that was due Gerald and any money that he was saving for him or did he have to get the Sheriff to get it for him.. Cousin Allen told Gerald that he had to give it to Ira and that he was sorry but he had to.(Dad told me that he was to go into town the next day and buy a bicycle.)
After Ira came back they moved around for the next three years ending up in Macon, Ga. Dad was working in a factory and living with his father and paying all the bills in Macon, Ga. When in July 1929 Ira for the fourth time that year picked up his pay from the factory and spent it on one of his girlfriends and her children. With part of Dad's pay he bought a bicycle for his girlfriend's son. After this Gerald decided to get away from his father and out of town. To go some place were Ira would not find him or could not do anything about it if he did find him..
On 17 July 1929 Gerald left Macon, Georgia and went to the U. S. Post Office in Fulton Co., Atlanta, Ga. Gerald went to enlist in the Army or Navy. Due to his age the Army and Navy Recruiters told him that he was to young and they did not need any one at that time, but come back when he was eighteen years old.
The Marine Corps Recruiter heard the conversation between the Army and Navy Recruiters and Gerald. As Gerald was leaving the Marine Corps Recruiter stopped Gerald and said, "I heard you tell the Army and Navy Recruiters that you were born May 26, 1912. That makes you seventeen years old. At seventeen you are to young to enlist in any branch of the military. You have to be eighteen years old to enlist in any branch of military service! Now listen to me and what I am saying. "You are seventeen years old now. You turn around and walk out of this building as a seventeen year old boy. Close the door behind you. Do not open that door again until you are eighteen years old. When you open that door again you will be a eighteen year old man. Come back in and tell me your name that you are eighteen years old and you were born May 27,1911. Do you understand what I am saying and telling you?"! Dad said yes. He turned around and walked outside closing the door behind him. Then he turned around and went back into the Post Office. He walked up to the Marine Corps Recruiter and said, "My name is Gerald Dupree Pierce, I am 18 years old and I was born May 27, 1911". The Recruiter accepted Gerald for enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps July 17, 1929.
In Beaufort County, S. C. Gerald had his Physical in the U. S. Naval Hospital, U.S.M.C.R.D., Parris Island, S.C. He passed his Physical for the Marine Corp. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps, at U.S.M.C.R.D., Parris Island, S.C. on 22 July 1929 for four years.
Even though Gerald was born at home in Wilkinson Co., Stephensville, Ga. area, the mailing address was for a time Toombsboro then Stephensville and back to Toomsboro, Ga. [At the intersection of Hawkinsville Road now Ga. Hwy. 112 and Toomsboro Road, was the center of Stephensville.} Today there are less than a dozen homes in the area. The Store & Post Office with most of the people and homes are no longer there.
Most people today do not even know this. This is why on all the Official Records have him, born May 27, 1911 (Some have May 26, 1911. in Toombsboro, Wilkinson Co.,Ga.)
