National Submarine Memorial
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

Monument. First formed in 1955 by surviving members of the United States Navy's Submarine Service, it was established in 1977 and was officially dedicated as a Federal Charter Memorial by issue of the Congress of the United States in 1981. Located at outside the main gate of the United States Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, California, it is the largest memorial on the west coast to honor Navy submarine veterans lost in America's combat conflicts from the Revolutionary War, World War II and Cold War incidents. Within the grounds are memorial brick walks to recognize America's first combat submarine the "Turtle" of the Revolutionary War, John P. Holland, father of the modern submarine, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, father of the first nuclear submarine and a brick dedicated to the Submarine Centennial. There are also 52 bronze plaques to display the names of each of the 52 submarines lost in World War II, which list the date, place and names of each sailor who were lost on board those boats. In addition there are memorial bricks which honor the Submarine Force's Medal of Honor recipients, plus monument panels dedicated to the crews on the "USS Thresher" loss in 1963 and "USS Scorpion" lost in 1968 while on services during the Cold War. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
