Candelario C. Alvarado and Esequiel Chavez, both of Silver City, were killed and seven others injured Friday afternoon when a jeep crashed into a pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 180 and the new townsite in Santa Rita. The jeep s brakes apparently failed to hold and it plowed into the truck, overturning it. The jeep was driven by John C. Utzinger of Santa Rita, who escaped injury. All were employees of Kennecott. State policeman Neil Moore and sheriff s officers investigated the accident and Moore reported that the two men died of chest injuries. Candelario C. Alvarado, 47, was an electrical helper at the Kennecott mine in Santa Rita and had lived in Silver City for 41 years. He is survived by his wife; six sons, Stanislado, with the armed forces in Germany, Willie, who is stationed with the armed forces in Mass., and Reynaldo, Manuel and Antonio, all of Silver City; three brothers; Anastacio, Santa Rita; Rafael and a half brother, Carlos Jaramillo, who was also injured in the accident. Rosary services were held at the home, 508 S. Arizona St., Monday evening and funeral mass was at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent de Paul s Church. Burial was at 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Catholic Cemetery in Silver City, under the direction of Cox Mortuary.
