Neptune came to this country at age 14 and rode horseback from Castle Garden to Roanoke, Howard County, MO, where he made his home with his uncle. At age 20, he married Miss Elizabeth Alexander, who was born in Kentucky and moved to Missouri at age 4. She was a great-grandniece of Daniel Boone. Children: Charles A., Kalispell, MT; James D., died Calgary, Canada; Neptune Jr., d. Plains, MT.
In 1849, Neptune left his wife and children with his uncle in Missouri and went by way of Panama to California, where he remained for six years. He returned to Missouri, gathered his family, and located to Denver, CO, in 1860; in 1862, they moved to Boise, ID; in 1866, they located to Helena, MT, then farmed near Townsend, MT, for two years. Gold fever brought Neptune to Cedar Springs in the spring of 1870; later he moved on to Plains, MT. where he spent the rest of his life farming and raising stock. He served as postmaster of Plains for a number of years, resigning that office in 1883. In 1893, Neptune was in a railway accident, losing his left leg just below the knee. He died of pneumonia, 25 May 1898, and his wife, Elizabeth, died of pneumonia six years later.
