PVT, NC 15th, Confederate States Army

Benjamin F. Cobb was born 1841 Pitt or Edgecombe County, NC, the 7th of 9 known surviving children (8 boys/1 girl) born to wealthy planter Ollen Cobb and his wife, Lydia Elizbeth Penninah Thigpen.

He was the paternal grandson William Cobb (ca. 1749-aft 1830) of Edgecombe County whose family had come from Isle of Wight, VA; and maternal grandson James Thigpen VI (1775-1849) and Sarah Elsey Little of Edgecombe County.

Benjamin was about 20 years old with Civil War broke out, and he and 6 of his brothers enlisted, where he served as a Private with the NC 15th Regiment formed in Tarboro. His brother, Job Cobb (1839-1863) would die in the conflict; and brother George Cobb (1844-1865) passed just a few months after the war ended.

Following the war, Benjamin returned to the family farm in Belvoir, Pitt County, and in 1873, the 32-year old veteran married 28-year old Mariah (Maria) Marjorie Alice Cherry, daughter of William Robert Cherry & Annie Eliza Brown of Edgecombe County.

Benjamin & Mariah would become parents of 6 known children, all buried here.

Benjamin Cobb was widowed in 1902 when his wife of 29 years died at age 56. He survived her 8 years, passing in 1910 at age 69.
