Samuel Swearingen was born in Montgomery County, Maryland, the son of Elemelech and Susannah Elizabet Higgins Swearingen. Samuel married Margaret Peyton in 1805 in Shepherdsville, Bullitt county, Kentucky. Samueue together with his wife and family moved to Texas in 1831 and settled at Millheim in what is now Austin County. They were the first Anglo-Americans to settle at that place.
Samuel and Mary had six children: Elemelech b. 1805; Thomas b. 1807; Margaret b. 1812; Nancy b. 1812; Susan L. b. 1813 and Valentine West b. 1818, all born in Kentucky.

Elemelech, Samuel's son was also a veteran of the Texas War for Independence serving as a Second Sergeant in the 1st Regiment Infantry, company 'B' under Captain Amasa Turner. He later served in the ill-fated Mier Expedition.
