Otero County
Colorado, USA
Death: Jun. 24, 2013

This world's loss is Heaven's gain as Gypsy Irene "Ikey" Harrington Ethridge, 89, departed from this life June 24, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. Ikey was born October 22, 1923 in Timpas, CO to Frank "Jack" and Georgia Rose (Cochran) Faatz. She grew up in Timpas, and attended elementary school there. She attended Junior High and High School in La Junta where she graduated in 1941.
Ikey was the matriarch of her family, lovingly referred to as "the Mother" or "the Grandmother." It is fitting she collected bluebirds," bluebirds of happiness" as she called them, since they are a family oriented bird. Ikey believed being surrounded by family made wherever you were, the "table where the rich people sat." She was never short on love or advice. She had the gift of hospitality and of making people feel special. "The door to her heart and home were always open." Ikey never knew a stranger.
Ikey had an adventurous spirit. In her youth, she enjoyed trick riding with the great Leonard Stroud. As an adult, she loved to travel, seeing much of the world with her sweetie by her side. She enjoyed working for many years as a nurse's aide in the school district. She was a founding member of PEO's Chapter GM, expressing love and devotion to her sisters. She was also a proud member of the Rebels club and the AVRMC hospital auxiliary. Ikey was well-read, and was always passing along a good book.
Ikey was a proud and passionate woman, never afraid to speak her mind. She often provided insightful, witty anecdotes and advice to loved ones. Ikey was an enthusiastic- life-long member of the GOP and a patriot. She served our Country as an election judge, encouraging family members to do the same. Ikey was very proud of the military service of her late husbands and other family members.
Ikey is survived by her children, John Christopher (Jody) Harrington of La Junta, Charley (Gail) Harrington of Pueblo, and April (David) Donnell of La Junta. Grandchildren Karlie Fisher, Kellie (Dan) Buhr, Kaysie (William) Schmidt, Zack Harrington, & Katy (Brian) Harris, all of La Junta. Jackie (Fred) Baca of Pueblo, Nancy (Patrick) Baird of Chicago, IL, Jackson (Joette) Donnell of Boone, CO, Missouri (Joseph) Krantz & Quinn Donnell of Rocky Ford, CO. She also leaves behind 20 great grandchildren, beloved stepchildren and their families, and many nieces and nephews. Ikey was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marilynn Springer, daughter Rosanne, and two treasured husbands Jack Gerald Harrington and Ralph Lee "Buck" Ethridge.
