|John O Charter|
|Death: ||Jun. 13, 1898|
Died around age 70 at Hazel Dell, the mountain home of Supervisor Hardin. The headline of John's obituary reads, "Another Pioneer Gone".
John arrived in California in 1849, making the trip "around the horn" in one of the first ships to make the voyage to the new El Dorado. He began mining at Tuolumne and was among the first to discover the rich gold deposits in the famous "Columbia diggings". In the 1870s Mr. Charter had a restaurant in Sonora in the building occupied in the year of his death by Wells, Fargo & Co, but he soon sold his business and went into the mountains where he resided continuously up to the time of his death.
Mr. Charter had many friends, and the funeral was largely attended by people from various portions of the county.
