Died age 87 years on Friday. Charles was the first man in his family in Tuolumne County. His parents were Jean Louis Daveluy and Frederique Toutant. His nickname, La Rose, indicated a connection with the Picardy region of France. Theophilus emigrated to this country at an early age and arrived in California in 1840. He was naturalized in July 1857 in the county court.

After undergoing the various vicissitudes of pioneer life in sundry portions of the state, he established himself in the early '60s at Confidence engaging in the general merchandise business. Mr. Daveluy was probably one of the best known and highly respected men in the county, every act of his in private life being above reproach, while in business his name was ever spoken with honor. His kindly face, courteous manner and unostentatious liberality was sadly missed. He was survived by two nephews in the county, A. Daveluy, who conducted the store in Confidence, and Prof. Fred Daveluy of Sonora, of the wholesale liquor firm of Daveluy & Co.

The funeral on Sunday at "the little mountain cemetery" was largely attended and the Rev. Father Guerin officiated. Hundreds present sincerely mourned the loss of a real friend.
