Frederick Hoke came to California in search of gold in 1850 with his friend Frederick Tarke. They mined at Rough and Ready for a while. In 1855, they returned to Ohio where Hoke married Mary Louisa Erke (also from Germany). Upon returning to California, Mr. Hoke and Mr. Tarke acquired 160 acres on West Butte in 1856 and by 1888, they had 500 acres. They eventually separated their holdings and farmed individually.
