Martha Almira Grant Ervin was born in Onslow County, North Carolina on 30 January 1843 to Reuben Grant and Hettie (or Hattie) Jarrott Grant, both North Carolina natives also.

She married George Washington Ervin, son of Abner and Molsey Ervin. Census records show 3 children: William Smith, Paul A., and Lillian G. Ervin.

The 1880 U.S. Census finds Martha, George and their 3 children living in the home of her father-in-law, Abner Ervin, a widower at the time. George's sister Mary is also living there.

Martha passed on at age 72, from an intestinal obstruction one week before her 73rd birthday, 23 January 1916. Her husband George preceded her in death 5 years before.

The Ervin family played a large and significant role in the prosperity of Onslow County. A family cemetery was named for Abner Ervin, Martha's father-in-law, on the original property in Richlands, well maintained and still owned by Ervin family.
