Carrie Frances Doughty (surname pronounced Dow-tee, NOT Doty), oldest daughter of Frank and Amanda Doughty, married Arthur F. Baird, July 14, 1898, as his first wife; they had five children: Floyd; Raymond; Hattie; Arthur; and Frank. Carrie was the driving force behind Baird's Purity Ice Cream Company on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, learning the business from her father, Frank. Unfortunately, the ice cream business was dealt a staggering blow when Carrie died from the 1917 influenza epidemic that year. Baird's Purity Ice Cream Company closed shortly thereafter, never to reopen. Carrie, by the way, is a direct descendant of at least three passengers in the ship Mayflower: James Chilton; Frances Cooke; and Thomas Rogers.
