Born Georgia Ioanna Georgeopoulos to Greek immigrants in New York City, she changed her name while in college to Jean Parks. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas, earned a master's degree in education at the University of Minnesota, and taught for 5 years in Texas on the border of Mexico before being recommended for a teaching position at a secret wartime government project in the mountains of New Mexico in 1943. She accepted the offer and started teaching in Los Alamos in 1944, with the children of many noted scientists as her pupils.
Jean married nuclear physicist Norris Nereson in 1948 and raised a family of 4 children: David, Christina, Brian, and Kenneth, and continued to teach for 50 years, not retiring until 1995 at age 80. She traveled the world, collecting artifacts, dolls, and cultural materials to bring world culture to the students in her classrooms.
She was active in the American Association of University Women and the teachers' sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. She was fluent in English and Greek, and had a working knowledge of Spanish, Italian and French. Other interests included sewing, gardening, bowling, reading, attending concerts and lectures, world travel, and gourmet food.
Above all, she was a "people person," winning the respect, admiration and affection of all who came in contact with her. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1995 and a Living Treasure of Los Alamos in 1999.
