Tova Antonette Johnson was born October 20, 1943 in Enderlin, ND to parents Niels and Johanna Nielsen. She died March 24, 2012 at her residence in rural Centerville at 68 years of age.
Tova lived in North Dakota and Minnesota for a time until moving to her grandfather's farm near Irene, SD. There began a lifetime love of animals, especially horses and dogs. She also helped her parents in the garden and it was there she found her love of plants. Her father died when she was 9. Tova married Roger Johnson on October 20, 1962. They spent their married life on several rented farms in the Centerville area until purchasing their current home in 1972 on a farm located northwest of Beresford. Tova and Roger had two children, Russell David in 1965 and Sandra JoAnn in 1969. Grandchildren were the light of her life. She enjoyed going to rodeos, and football, softball and baseball games to see them compete and cheer them on.
Tova always had a horse or two and delighted in raising a foal. She liked attending horse shows with Sandra, helping her kids with their 4-H projects and then attending the State Fair. She was a member of the American Iris Society, the Sioux Empire Iris Society of Sioux Falls and the Siouxland Iris Society in Sioux City, IA. Tova loved her irises, but even more her iris friends. She greatly enjoyed the iris sales, shows and plant exchanges. She was also a member of Skrefsrud Lutheran Church and felt like all the members there were part of her family
Survivors include the love of her life Roger; two children, her daughter Sandra Hart and husband Tut of Centerville and son Russell and wife Lisa of Beresford; four grandchildren, Katerina JoAnn Hart, Sid Augustus Hart, Alexis Tamera Johnson and Riley Dalton Johnson; a "cousin she called brother" Charles Hansen of Tacoma, WA, lifelong friend Ernest Igon of Chattanooga, TN; special dogs Timmy, Elsa and Skippy; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Skrefsrud Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, SD, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6PM to 7PM with a prayer service at 7PM all at the church.
