Radcliffe Signal Thur 23 Oct. 1919
Beresford, (South Dakota) Representative;
A terrible accident occurred at the home of HELGE H. LUNNING, thirteen miles northwest of Beresford, Tuesday evening, about five o'clock, which resulted in MR. LUNNING dying shortly after, and two sons being seriously, though it is not now thought fatally injured. The accident was caused by the expolsion of an acetylene tank. The large tank was located in the yard, and as all know who are familiar with the plants, the used carbide has to be cleaned out occasionally and replenished. This was being done, and the tank was lowered to its place, but fearing that the valve was not sufficiently tight, MR. LUNNING took a pair of pliers; and tightened the valve. Whether or not this had anything to do with the explosion, is not known, but at this time, there was a terrific blast. MR. LUNNING fell with his arm crushed, shoulder broken, left eye closed, and five ribs broken some of them penetrating the lungs. He lived about two hours, conscious to the end. Doctors were summoned, but nothing could be done. Two boys, CARLETON 18 and OTIS 11, were assisting in the work. One was holding a large umbrella over the father so that no moisture got to the carbide. CARLETON was blown about twenty feet and landed in a potato patch. OTIS was blown across the fence. Both the boys were badly burned about the face and hands. They were rushed to the hospital at Lennox, and it was found that Otis had a fracture of the skull, and the older boy may lose one eye, but they are doing nicely. Mr. Lunning leaves a wife and thirteen children--eleven boys and two girls. They all live at home except one daughter, Mrs. Edward Rude, who lives on the Stephen Olson farm. He was born in Norway January 23, 1864. He was a member of the Skefarund congregation, and bore the reputation of being a fine man in every way. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and 2 o'clock at the Skrefsrud church. The accident which removes the head of a respected family is indeed a sad one, and the bereaved have the sympathy of all in their loss. The victim of the above accident was a former resident of this community, and is a brother of Michael, Amund, Peter and Edmund Lunning, all of whom reside in or near Radcliffe, and who with their wives went to Dakota to attend the funeral.
