WALTER ALBERT THOMAS JOSEPH BERG, MMJC Business owner, loving family man and friend of Jesus, Walter Albert Thomas Joseph Berg, 92, of Yuba City, passed away from complications after suffering a heart attack at 10:41 p.m. June 13, 2011, at Rideout Hospital, surrounded by family and friends, including his wife and 12 children. A Sutter County resident for 60 years, Walter founded Sierra Gold Nurseries, one of the largest wholesale bareroot fruit and nut tree nurseries, serving orchardists throughout California and the northwest. With his wife, Mother Ellen Mary MMJC, Brother Walter MMJC, co-founded Marian Missionaries of Jesus Crucified, an international contemplative Catholic community with houses of prayer in Vacaville, CA and County Kerry, Ireland. The son of Herman and Mary Berg, Walter was born on March 1, 1919 in St. Louis, MO and moved with his family to Southern California in 1923, where he was raised and then worked for his father's air conditioning installation business, before enlisting in the Army Air Corp as an aviation cadet, training navigators until the end of WWII. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, where he met Ellen Sullivan, whom he married in 1948. He worked for engineering firms in the Bay Area, designing truck and trailer bodies until moving his young family to Yuba City in 1951 to start Sierra Gold Nurseries with his father-in-law, C.E. Sullivan. Walter always gave back to the community, including serving as a member of the Sutter County Grand Jury and as a trustee of the Yuba College Foundation. He was a generous benefactor of Our Lady of New Clairvaux Monastery in Vina, CA. A 3rd degree Knight of Columbus, Walter loved his church community of St. Isidore, where he contributed generously, in particular to the building of the new church and school in the 1950's, and was active in the Father's Club and as a Eucharistic Minister, bringing communion to the sick for many years. Walter dedicated his life to raising his 12 children, including treating them to regular picnics, snow days and road trips throughout the States. He worked tirelessly to grow his business and, in his later years, to support his wife in their religious community, traveling with her to their house of prayer in Ireland until the last year of his life. Walter is survived by his wife, Ellen; his 12 children, Terese (Mike), Dr. Mary (Bob), Monica (Javier), Bernadette (Richard), Loretta (Jim), Bridget (Steve), Dr. Grace, Gloria (Blaine), Fr. Blaise, Regina (David), Brian (Danka) and Eileen (Jack); 27 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and his siblings, Pauline, John, Elizabeth, Larry, Marty and Fr. Ralph. His siblings, Cecilia, Karl, Sr. Mary Petra SNJM, and Robert predeceased him. A confident leader and successful businessman, Walter was well respected in the local community and California nursery industry for his integrity, innovative spirit and generosity to his employees. He will be remembered as a benevolent and gentle man, whose kindness touched everyone he met in a personal way. He watched the seasons and skies, listened to the birds and gratefully greeted each morning at his breakfast table with "it looks like another beautiful day in Sutter County." Walter loved praying the rosary, and a rosary vigil was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church,
