RE: William Whitehead
As stated on your memorial, the source comes from the 1860, 1870 census and both of his marriage records. In addition, the 1850 census, his father's will (Jesse) (IOW Probate Records) and the Jesse Whitehead bible record which gives names, dates and marriages (Genealogies of VA Families, From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine Vol. V, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1982, p. 787.
Info below from Janet Harold:
I am glad to see that you included a memorial to William J Whitehead (b 1845) along with the others for people buried at the Barbour cemetery. I have added a photo of him and flowers. However, he is not actually buried there. He abandoned his family and disappeared sometime between 1900 and 1910. No one knew what had happened to him. My mother said she thought he might have returned to the Norfolk area, but that was only a guess.
I do think I have found him, but I am not able to be certain of it. In the 1900 census in Henry Co. VA his name was given as Whithead, although he had always been called Whitehead earlier. (You don't have that on your page, but he was there with his family in the 1900 census.)
I should add in defense of William J Whitehead that in 1900 he had been a sales agent for patent medicine.
A 1906 Federal law required labelling of certain ingredients in these products, which probably would have reduced sales. He may have abandoned his family because he was no longer able to support them.
