A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday for Sister Albeus Hartigan, a retired teacher and principal. The Mass was celebrated at Anna House Chapel at the Sarah Community in Bridgeton. Burial was at Incarnate Word Cemetery in Normandy.

Sister Hartigan died Sunday (Nov. 26, 2000) of infirmities at Anna House in Bridgeton. She was 94.

Sister Hartigan was a teacher for 59 years, serving 17 years at Incarnate Word Academy in Normandy as a teacher and later a principal.

She also taught at schools in Jefferson City; Cicero, Ill.; Old Mines, Mo.; and San Antonio.

After her retirement in 1981, she lived at the Incarnate Word Convent in Normandy, the former Incarnate Word Hospital in St. Louis and finally at Anna House.

Sister Hartigan was born Josephine Hartigan in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1905. She later came to the United States with a group of young women to enter the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She professed her final vows there in 1927.

Sister Hartigan received a bachelor's degree in science from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and a master's degree in education from Catholic University in Washington.

Among survivors are a brother, Thomas Hartigan of Ojai, Calif.
