Daniel (nickname "Dill") was the son of Archibald Pennell and Lucinda Sophia (King) Freeman and was born near the hamlet of Volga City, Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa in 1861. He had seven brothers and sisters: Eulalia Alzina, John (died young), Dewitt (died young), Anna Diana, William Fernando, Francis Ferry and Jessie Floy. Daniel spent his youth on his family farm in the Hewitt Creek neighborhood near Volga and attended school there. The 1880 U S Census records that he was living with his parents and was nineteen years of age. It also reported that he had attended school the previous year. In 1883 his father died of pneumonia. Daniel was a farmer and spent his short life at his vocation in the vicinity of Volga City. On September 4, 1888 at West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, Daniel married Lyda Ward. She was the sister of Warren Ward, who married Florence Bradshaw, a first cousin of Daniel. His life took a terrible turn of events and he died of typhoid fever less than four months after his marriage. He lived only until Christmas eve, dying December 24, 1888. He is buried at the Garretson Cemetery near Volga City, Iowa. His widow Lyda married a year and a half later.

A special memorial to my Iowa cousin Daniel who was a nephew of my great grandmother Elmena Freeman St John. Daniel was like a falling star: a wondrous creation but lasting so briefly to be appreciated. He died less than four month after he was married.
