Very little is known about Catherine. She was born around 1832 and was the daughter of Katherine (Lee) and Vaughn Johnson. Her mother was the daughter of Samuel and Katherine Lee. Her father was born in 1783. Her parents came to Rock County, Wisconsin sometime in the mid-1800s. When she was about eighteen years of age, she married Juan Fernandez Freeman at Union, Rock County, Wisconsin on July 18, 1850 by the Reverend Joseph Knapp. Their son Samuel Johnson Freeman was born June 2, 1851 at Sterling, Crawford County, Wisconsin. The town of Freeman in Freeman Township, Crawford County, Wisconsin was named for her husband. In 1850 he with Hon. Sterling went to Crawford County to live. In dividing the township, Mr. Sterling suggested naming it Freeman, and it was adopted. Juan owned a farm and built a house there, but soon after went to Iowa. About 1853 Juan and Catherine went to Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa to live. Three more children were added to the family: Eliza Jane, John Charles Fremont "Mont", and Lee (who died in infancy).
Her husband Juan was a miller in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Later he persued other occupations, but for most of his life, he was a farmer. Catherine died in 1865 near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. She is buried beside her son, Lee, near the hamlet of Volga in the Garretson Cemetery.
