St John (that was his first name) was given his name most likely in honor of his aunt Elmena Freeman St John. Elmena was the elder sister to his father Robert Lucas Freeman. His mother was Hannah Jane (Lowe) Freeman. Very little is known about St John. He was born sometime around 1850 on his parent's farm located near the hamlet of Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. One source gives the date as 1852. The farm has been identified as being on the Clayton County-Fayette County line. St John had six brothers and sisters: Henrietta, Mary Ann, Daniel Lowe, Joseph Hewitt, David George and John Vine. One source suggests he may have had one more sister by the name of Esther. The U S Census of 1850 identifies his father who was twenty-one years of age and had established a farm in Fayette County. Living at home was Robert's wife Hannah (24) and two daughters: Esther A. (4) and Henrietta (1). His brother Daniel was born in October of 1856 at Volga, Iowa so it is assumed St. John was born sometime after the sisters (both were born in Wisconsin)and before his brother Daniel (born in Volga). There appears to be conflicting information regarding his two sisters. One source states that Henrietta was born in Wisconsin in 1845 and another sister named Mary Ann, also born in Wisconsin, in 1848. The only source that mentions a sister named Esther was the 1850 census. This could have been an error by the census enumerator who listed the child's name as "Esther A." rather than "Mary Ann." The only other information available on St John is that "he died young." No date was given as to when he died, where he died or where he was interred. Most likely he was buried with other members of the Freeman clan which is the Garretson Cemetery near Volga, Iowa.
