David Howell was the third son and forth child of Isaac and Margaret Howell born in Covert, Seneca Co., New York on 7 Feb 1828. He moved with his family west when he was 8 years old and they first moved to Michigan. Soon they moved on to Quincy, Illinois and later across the Mississippi River to Hanibal, Missouri. In the early months of 1846 they planned a move to Oregon by wagon train. David was 18 as they started the Journey.

As the wagons headed west a little too late that year David saw many adventures with Indians, and buffalo and eventually a change in plans to go to California instead of Oregon. Ultimately the Howell family joined a wagon train with the Donner Party and then later separated passing eachother several times along the trail through Utah and Nevada deserts to finally start up the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and cross at Emmigrants Gap. They ended up being the last wagon group over the pass in 1846 and made it to California in late October just as the rains came to the valley and the infamous snow caught the Donner Party on the other side.

David married in Alexandria, Clark Co., Missouri 8 Apr 1855 while on a business trip. Martha Ellen Wade was 14 years old and David 27 when they married. They headed to New York City and then shipped to Panama and crossed the Isthmus of Panama on the newly constructed railroad to Panama City. They boarded the Golden Age Steamer and reached San Francisco 1 Jun 1855. They lived in Napa until 1856 and then moved to Calistoga until about 1860 when they moved to St Helena and David and his brother John opened a blacksmith shop. In 1873 David and family moved to San Luis Obispo to be near his parents. They took the Coast steamer and Landed in San Luis Harbor 18 Oct 1873.

David contracted Brights Disease and died at 57 on 8 Dec 1885. He is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in San Luis Obispo.
