Charles and Sarah Ernestine Ramsey are listed in the 1900 Carroll Co., AR, census. His occupation is listed as grocery man. It is not known when or why they moved to Washington State, although it is known that they adopted an infant boy in Dec. 1912, and that their address in Jan. of 1917 was in Ballard, Washington. The occupation listed on his death certificate is lumberman. According to Charlie's daughter-in;law, Pauline Crawford Ramsey, Charles suffered from numerous infections caused by splinters in his hands that caused him to retire from the lumber business. His son, William Howard, had to take on several jobs while still in school to help support the family.
In 1912, Charlie and Urnestine adopted an 8-month old child and named him William Howard Ramsey. They lived in Washington until the death of Charlie's sister, Kezziah "Kissey" Ramsey Harbert in January 1937. Charlie inherited the bulk of her estate, purchased a house, furniture, etc. Although they bought an automobile (a Studebaker) after arriving in California, neither Charlie nor Urnestine knew how to drive! Whoever drove the car, usually their son, and wherever it went, so went Charlie and Urnestine!
Two land deeds recorded on January 10, 1917, show that Charles bought two ,lots from the Residents Park Land Company in Benton County, Washington. One is described as "Lot numbered seventeen (17), Block number four (4), of Dr. Ely's Colony Number One (1), according to the recorded plat thereof on file in he auditor's office of said county .." The other (which is hand-written), describes the second piece of property as "Lot numbered (17) seventeen, in Block Numbered (5) Five, in Ely's 2nd Addition (in Section (12), Township (8) Eight, North of Range (29) Twenty-Nine." Both conveyances stipulate that the purchaser must not be " a Chinaman, Japanese, Negro, or Indian." Each of these lots was bought for the amount of $1.00 "and other good value consideration." At the time of these purchases, Charles lived at 809 earl Ave., Balard, WA. I believe that this continued to be the Ramsey's residence until they moved to California.
