Johnie S. Foster of Afton died Sunday, July 23, 2001, at Hillcrest Specialty Hospital in Tulsa after a lengthy illness. He was 68.

He was born May 30, 1933, at Berryville, Ark., to Alfred and Irene Tackett Foster. He was a veteran, having served with the Army in Korea. He last worked as custodian at First Christian Church in Miami. He moved to Afton in 2000 from Plano, Texas, where he enjoyed working with his wife, caring for the elderly. He was a handyman with a unique talent to do just what was needed (welding, mechanic, painter, plumber and other jobs.) He had a love for the elderly and used his talents as a ministry to help them. He was a member of the American Legion in Miami and a member of First Christian Church of Afton. He married Juanita A. Chandler at Miami on Aug. 18, 1957. She survives.

Other survivors include his stepmother, Virginia Birchfield of Eureka Springs, Ark.; a son, Johnie W. and wife Pam Foster of Miami; a daughter, Anita and husband Brian Halsey of Crandall, Texas; five brothers, Noel, Willie and Archie Foster, all of Huntsville, Kenneth Foster of Lemore, Ind., and Chester Foster of Weippe, Ind.; a half-brother, Danny Foster of Wichita, Kan.; a half-sister, Ruth Ann Drake of Huntsville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Spradling, and a grandson, Keith Morrison.

The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church of Afton with the Rev. Lee Williams officiating.

Pallbearers are Mickey Miller, Richard Bassett, Kevin Chandler, Chris Mercer, Andy Lee Hilton, Tim Chandler, and Jerry Wayne Chandler. Burial will follow at Sixkiller Cemetery with the Grove Veterans' Ritual Team performing military rites.

Visitation is 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church of Afton. The body will lie in state at Adcock Funeral Home until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Doug Hanson Fund in care of the Adcock Funeral Home.
