Gerald Gaffney Obit from May 2, 2000, San Clemente, CA Sun Post News: Capt. Gerald T. Gaffney, USMC (ret), age 78, passed away on April 29, 2000, at his home in San Juan Capistrano. A 44 year resident, Jerry was always involved in many civic activities, including Chairman of the San Juan Capistrano Planning Commission for 10 years, founding president of the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, treasurer of the Exchange Club, president of the Military Order of World Wars, and a member of the San Juan Capistrano DAV and VFW. A 21 year "lifer" in the marine Corps, Jerry served in the Pacific during World War II and the Korean War, received training at the U. S. Naval School of Naval Justice, and later served as Adjutant of the 2nd Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton, a position from which he retired in 1964. Jerry was a 44 year member of the San Juan Capistrano Catholic parish, where he served as Cantor of the Latin High Mass for 30 years. Jerry also held positions of parish leadership, including Grand Knight of Stella Marsh Council, San Clemente, and founding Grand Knight of the Mission San Juan Capistrano, founding member of the El Camino Real 4th Degree Council, president of the Holy Names Society, president of the Parent Teacher Guild, as the oldest living Eagle Scott in Orange County, was Scout Master of Troop 176, which encompassed the elite Beaver Patrol Unit and which produced several award winners. Jerry served as the founding president of the San Juan Capistrano Little League and coached teams for several years. Jerry founded the Gaffney Farmer's Insurance Agency of San Juan Capistrano. Jerry was survived by his wife of 57 years, Dottie, and his 6 children and nine grandchildren: Patrick Gaffney of San Francisco, Kathleen (Phillip) Keogh of Rochester, NY (Christina, Teresa, Ignatius, Mary Beth), Joseph Gaffney of Rohnert Park (Megan and Katherine), Matthew Gaffney of San Juan Capistrano (Laura), Thomas Gaffney of La Puente and Mary Ellen (Joseph) Brown of Spokane, WA (Rebecca and Clare). Jerry is also survived by his nephews, Ronald Bacon of Pacifica and David and Dennis Bacon of Santa Clara. Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was held at the New Parish Church, Mission San Juan Capistrano, with Rev. Monsignor Paul Martin, officiating. Military Honors followed at the Old Mission Cemetery in San Clemente.
