Murder victim. The son of English-born California land baron John (Don Juan) Forster and his wife, Ysidora, a sister of Pio Pico, the last governor of Mexican California, "Chico" Foster was the family favorite, a noted judge of cattle, and in 1870, at age 28, had accompanied former US Secretary of State William Seward when he visited Cuba and Mexico. He is most often remembered, however, as the notorious rake of Gilded Age Angeleno society who was killed by the woman he'd jilted. Allegedly the father of two illegitimate children from prior liaisons, the handsome 40-year-old bachelor persuaded Lastania Abarta, a singer in her father's popular pool hall, to elope with him. After spending the night with the 18-year-old Abarta in a hotel, he slipped away and evaded further attempts on her part to bring him to the altar. Desperate and enraged by the loss of her honor, Abarta enlisted the help of her sister, Hortensia, in her pursuit of Forster. When the two women confronted him on a Los Angeles street, Abarta pulled out a pistol and shot her former beloved in the eye, killing him instantly. Subsequently tried for murder, she was acquitted by the all male jury, who based their decision on the then-common belief that unlike men, women were emotionally, intellectually, and morally impaired by their anantomy, and it was inevitable that a "virtuous" woman who had been deprived of her virtue would go mad. The Abarta sisters afterwards established new lives elsewhere, and Chico's remains were consigned to the Forster Family Mausoleum in the old Mission Cemetery of San Juan Capistrano, a property which had once belonged to his father but had later been returned to the Catholic Church by President Abraham Lincoln. His survivors included his parents and two brothers.
