John Whitten Collins was born in December of 1818 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina to John M. Collins and Edith M. Collins. He was Col. in the Fayette County Militia before the Civil War. He was Fayette County Commissioner for more than 20 years. Collins Beat" was named in honor of him according to an article in the "Alabama Baptist".

In about 1852 John married Jane Caldwell Wheeler, daughter of David Wheeler and Elizabeth C. McMakin Wheeler.

They had five children who died in infancy, one at age 9, four who lived to adulthood; Edith"Edie" Collins, John Newton Collins, Hosea Dean Collins, and Mary Jane Collins.

His siblings were;S.A. Collins, Judah (Judy) Collins, A.M. Collins, Thomas Collins, W.F. Collins, Richard Collins, Joel Collins, Amy E. Collins, Sarah A. Collins, and James B. Collins.
