Death: Feb. 13, 1922

John was the son of John William Guest and Elizabeth Tracy, and the husband of Mary Marilda Scott, the daughter of William Wyatt Scott of Virginia and Irena Branson of Tennessee. They were married 12 Oct 1878 at Washington Mine, Mariposa, and had the following children:
* Lulu Estella, Mrs William McMenemy
* John William III #48238058
* Clarence Scott #85829326
* Charlotte May, Mrs Henry Black & Mrs John Langley #87059667
* Minnie E, Mrs John McMillan #149825518
* Albert Henry #127177033
* Elijah Walter #52114258
* Blanche Lacy, Mrs Milton Hill #40190838
* Norman Edison #28548094

He left home by age 16, employed at the Washington mine as a hard rock miner where he met Mary Marilda Scott. John and Mary were married at the Washington mine on October 12, 1878. The ceremony was conducted by Justice of the Peace Samuel W. Carr.
John and Mary purchased a ranch in 1890. Their ranch was at the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Mount Gaines Road where they built a large nine-room house east of a small stream that ran through the property. An artisan well supplied the water for the house. A large barn (still standing in 2002), blacksmith shop and harvester shed were also built on the ranch. Mining was in John's blood and he left the animal husbandry and farming to their sons.
Several of the children were born on the ranch, attended Quartzburg School. All of the children lived into adulthood.
By 1921, the entire family had moved away from Mariposa county. John and Mary owned an operated the old Tuolumne Hotel on Main Street in Merced. It was there on February 13, 1922 that John, as had his father and brothers, died of the dreaded Miners Consumption. The five sons and John McMillian, a son-in-law, were pallbearers for both John and Mary's funerals.
