Published Everton family history lists death date as 19 April 1870; however, Death records -- Book A, pg.1, line 4 -- in Minnesota lists John Everton, married, age 79yrs, 9mo, born Kent, England died April 25, 1870 of paralysis, death registered November 8, 1870

US Federal Census Mortality Schedules: Schedule 2. - Persons who Died during the Year ending 1st June, 1870, in Elmore, County of Faribault, State of Minnesota, enumerated by me, S P Child, Ass't Marshal. Number of the Family, as given in the 2d column of Schedule 1: 48, Everton, John, age 76, male, white, married, b. England, father & mother of foreign birth, Month April, Farmer, Disease Inflamation of the Bowels
------------
The son of John Pearson Everton & Mary Elkington, John came to America in 1830. He fathered a son by Mary Cooper in 1816 in England; married Mary Hall 10 Apr 1820 also in England, and they were the parents of 5 children; married Matilda Staples 24 Aug 1830 in London, England just before they left for America. They were the parents of 7 children.

Matilda died 29 Nov 1903 near Aten, Cedar Co., NE. She supposedly is buried in Riverview Cemetery at Aten, but when we visited there, none of the old timers could direct us to such a cemetery, and we could not find a record of such a place.
------------------
John at age 5 and sister, Alicia at age 2 were left as orphans. John's principal guardian was Marston Buzzard of Lutterworth, Leicestershire. An uncle, John Burbury of Monkskirby, Warwick was a secondary guardian.

At age 18, John was admitted to Cambridge University: "Everton, John, pens (age 18) at Magdalene 11 May 1811. A ward of ___ Buzzard, Esq. of Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Son of John P. Everton of Little Peatling, Leics. b. 1792. School, Claybrooke. Matric. Michs 1811."

Records state that John was a member of Corpus Christi and later studied medicine. Studies were never completed. John had completed the term of apprenticeship in a drugstore which they were then required to do. He was ready to take the surgery study but his guardian was pressuring him toward being a minister. John completed the D.D. course but said he had no gift of speech and would never take up the ministry -- If he could not be a doctor, he would be nothing. And he kept his word.

In about 1816 at age 24, John became acquainted with one Mary Cooper. John's sister, Alicia, was married to Edward Cooper, brother of Mary. Though unmarried, John and Mary had a son named John Cooper Everton.

When court proceedings regarding the birth of John Cooper were completed, John traveled to London. Here he met and married his first wife, Mary Hall. "John Everton, of the parish of Sundridge, Kent, bachelor, and Mary Hall, of the parish of St. Andrew, Holborn, spinster, married by license at St. Andrew Holborn on April 10th, 1820, in the presence of Amelia Thomson and R. Hall, witnesses, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Robert Black, curate." (Guildhall Library, M.S. 6672/4, p. 31, entry no. 93). Five children were born to John and Mary: Pearson, John Henry, Alfred, Matilda and Mary.

Daughter Matilda drowned at a little less than age 2. Within one month of Matilda's death, Mother Mary gave birth to baby Mary. The baby lived but Mother Mary did not survive. She died 1 May 1829, and was buried near Matilda in Sundridge.

With this double tragedy, John's life was truly disrupted as were the lives of his children. New plans were necessary for Father John, now age 38. In a letter to Mrs. Sarah Marlow (sister of his deceased wife) on 29 July 1830, he writes from Ide Kill Kent:
"Dear Madam, I write to inform you of my return to America and that I shall shortly be in Staffordshire to see John Henry who I hope is well. It is my intention to leave again for ever as it is a beautiful Country. Please give my best respects to all my friends, Yours most respectfully, (signed) John Everton
I went this morning to see little Mary who enjoys good health."

Baby Mary had gone to live with Mrs Richard Staples, where she remained until the age of 9. A daughter, Matilda, had been born to Richard & Jane Staples on 22 July 1808. John fell in love. Although Matilda wanted to marry a man named George H _____, parental influence prevailed and John & Matilda were married by an Episcopal minister at St. Mark Parish Church, Kennington, London, England on 24 Aug 1830. Shortly after, they departed from England destined for America. Sons Pearson and Alfred accompanied their father and new mother. Daughter Mary joined her father at a later date. John Henry remained in England, and died Septmber 4, 1877 in North Wales.

John and Matilda settled in Deerfield, Oneida county, New York. Their seven children (Catherine, Frederick, Phillip, William, Thomas, Edwin and Jane) were born here.

John died of paralysis on April 25, 1870 in Elmore Township, Faribault county, Minnesota, and was buried on his homestead.

There is one more son born to John & Matilda. Frederick died October 28, 1919 at Hat Creek near Burney, Shasta County, California. Burial place is unknown.
