Alfred Norman Chadwick, 90, of Straits, died Friday, July 29, 2005, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1914, the son of the late Guy Carlton and Myrtle Lewis Chadwick. He received his bacherlor's and master's degrees in biology from Appalachian State University in Boone.

Mr. Chadwick was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aerographer first class in the South Pacific on Fiji and Funafuti.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator and athlete. Recognized for his excellence in teaching biology, Mr. Chadwick's career of 41 years was spent in Bolivia, Wilmington, Beaufort, Smyrna and Louisburg schools, and at Louisburg College.

He was an exceptional athlete, particularly in baseball, which he played and coached. He and his wife enjoyed sailing their boat, Petrel, in Core Sound.

Mr. Chadwick was devoted to his church, Straits United Methodist, where he taught adult class for many years and served faithfully in numerous church positions.

His funreal will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Straits United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Chadwick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mattalene McRee Chadwick; three daughters, Martha C. Hobgood and husband Robert of Louisburg, Carolyn C. Webb and husband Anderson of Greensboro and Sarah Loftin of Beaufort; a sister, Clara Chadwick Bailey of Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren, Dr. Lacy Hobgood and wife Elizabeth of Newark, De., Christiana Hobgood Fischer and husband Steven of Raleigh; and Jeremy Dillard Webb and Brian Alexander Webb, both of Greensboro; and a great-grandson, Chadwick McCrary Hobgood.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Gray Chadwick, Leon Eugene Chadwick and Guy Carlton Chadwick.

The family will receive friends immediately before the service at the church, and at other times at home
Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. of Morehead City.
