On 21 October 1857, Owen Durkin married Mildred Susannah "Susan" Carter at Fort Belknap. She was 15 years old.

She was killed in the Elm Creek massacre of 13 October 1864 near the confluence of the Brazos River and Elm Creek.

Millie Durkin's parents lived in Red River County and Navarro County before they came to Young County in the 1850s. Its possible one of those counties is the location of Millie's birth.
