Obituary from Marysville Appeal-Democrat January 16, 1959
'Goat Doctor Of Sierras' Dies In Placerville
PLACERVILLE (UPI)- Frank M. Andre, 70, a man who claimed he could cure the self by means of a mysterious "gift from God died Friday in his goat-skin lined home.
Andre, often a storm center of medical opinion, was known throughout Northern California as "the goat doctor of the Sierras.'
Born Francis Xavier Machek in Vienna, Andre came to the U S in 1911. He opened his controversial medical practice in 1921. Barefoot because "you contact the soil directly and get health giving powers from the good earth" and with hair reaching to his shoulders because "If you cut it, it diminishes the power," Andre became an almost legendary figure.
The goat doctor is survived by his wife, Carmelita, 32, whom he married six years ago.

Obituary from Associated Press
'Goat Doctor' Dies in Lonely Mountain Cabin
PLACERVILLE Francis Andre, the "Goat Doctor of the Sierra" died yesterday.
Andre, in his mid 60s, wore his gray hair long and resembled a biblical patriarch. He wore loose-fitting coveralls and went barefoot. He had been ill before his death.
Andre claimed an intuitive sixth sense the ability to diagnose ailments merely by placing his hands on a patient. Although he was the subject of intense controversy, thousands came to him from all over the world.
The title of "Goat Doctor" came from his herd of goats, kept near his rugged mountain cabin about eight miles north of Placerville.
Born in Vienna, Andre was orphaned at the age of six when his parents died in Czechoslovakia. He came to California as a child.
"I don't claim to cure anyone," Andre sold, "I tell those who need medical treatment to see a doctor. My treatment is mostly a form of chiropractic adjust."
His fee was the same to all a flat $3.
