Death: 1878
Harrison County
Texas, USA

Benedict Barnes, Jr., born in Edgefield County, S.C. sometime around 1810, was the son of Benedict Barnes, Sr. and Sally Lanham Barnes.

After migrating to Alabama where he lived for some years and where he married his first wife, Elizabeth Broadwater, Benedict made his way to Texas. There, the earliest evidence of his arrival is found in the 1849 Upshur County tax records, and on an 1851 Upshur County jury list from which he was picked as a grand jury member. Although no deed has been found for it, the tax roll indicates rendered acreage on the W.C.Wakeland Survey as did property of Hezekiah and a William Barnes. Also, in 1849, Benedict witnessed a deed of Anderson Wright, whose wife was Sarah Ann Barnes, the sister of Hezekiah Barnes.

Although, as said, no deed has been found for Benedict Barnes in Upshur County, he continued to be on the tax roll until 1851, after his marriage to Mary Ann Bass Ford.*

By 1853 Benedict and Mary had made their way across the county line into Harrison County and acquired acreage, some 160 acres, on the E.A. Merchant Survey. Benedict Barnes appears on the Harrison tax rolls for that year through 1876, after which the property, from 1878 through 1888, is rendered by "Mrs. Mary Barnes."

The children of Benedict and Mary Ann Barnes were:

Frances Sophire Barnes (Fannie) born ca. 1854, Freedom, Harrison County, Texas; she married W.J. Bell, moved to Wichita Falls, then Arlington, Texas.

Ellie Barnes, born ca. 1856 in Harrison County, Texas; age 25 on 1880 census.

Caroline Virginia Barnes, who married Dr. Robert McClelland and made her home in Gilmer, Texas.

Benjamin Allen Barnes , who married Ellie Pollard and moved to Arlington Texas, where he became a very successful businessman.

Thomas E. Barnes , who married Viola Metcalf, settled in Marshall, Texas, and worked for the T & P Railroad.

William Oliver Barnes who married Alice Gray Owens.

Della Barnes, born ca. 1865, age 15 on 1880 census; believed to have died young.

Leela Blanche Barnes who married William Robert Stephens and who made her home in Gilmer.

*(Mary Ann, who was first married to William Ford, may have been a sister of L.L. Bass. On the 1880 census, Mary Ann gives her birth place as Alabama and her mother and father were born in S.C. They and L.L. Bass were all on the 1840 Talladega County census.)
