George Compton, 78, of Majestic, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was born at Stopover, April 26, 1936, the son of the late Charlie and Mary Dotson Compton.
He was a coal miner with McCoy-Elkhorn and a member of the Woodman Community Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Grant Compton; and four sisters, Edis Blankenship, Inis Blankenship, Eunice New and Sally Compton.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sue Dotson Compton; two sons, George Everett Compton of Freeburn and Shawn Compton of Blackberry; two daughters, Carol Sue Scott of Majestic and Patty Ball of Phelps; one brother, Jessie Compton of Freeburn; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, in the Faith Tabernacle Church with Odis Blankenship and Charles Meeks officiating. Burial will follow in the Freeburn Community Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.
Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday, at the church, with services nightly at 7.
