Son of Goldie Shapiro Gaylor and Charles Sidney Gaylor.
Served during WWII with the 365th Harbor Craft Company in the South Pacific where he was awarded three bronze stars.
Ater the war, he completed his education at Washington University, doing an internal medicine residency at University of Utah and training in endocrinology at Duke University Medical School and Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC.
Walter moved to Bristol, Tennessee in 1955 where he practiced as a physician until his retirement in 1994.
He was a member of the B'Nai Sholom Congregation in Bristol, Tennessee where he taught Sunday School for many years.
He married Sylvia Katz in 1968. They had no children.
His maternal grandparents were Abraham Shapiro (son of Meyer W Shapiro) and Rose Handelman Shapiro, both Russian immigrants who settled in St. Louis about 1891.
