Col. Josiah T. Askew born in North Carolina, his family moved to Stewart county, Tennessee. He was commissioned as Captian on June 10th, 1811 in Stewart County, Tennessee, served under Andrew Jackson in the battle of New Orleans. Retired from regular army in 1819 and settled in what is now Elsah, Illinois. He was one of the early pioneers of Jersey county, Illinois and created a 600 acre Maple sugar plantation called Askew Hollow. He served in the Illinois Militia as a Colonel. Married Hannah Bates, the daughter of William Bates another prominent Illinois Pioneer and Revolutionary war soldier. He died from exhaustion from fighting a fire on his land March 13th, 1845. The family buried him at Askew Hollow. The exact location of the family burial is lost.
