Herbert Frederick Carl Degner, son of the late Carl Degner and Mathilda nee Schmidt, was born September 13, 1883, in Friedensau, Nebr. On September 16, 1883, he was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church. On April 11, 1897, he was confirmed by the same church.

On February 27, 1908, he was united in marriage to Dorothea Vinkenberg in Trinity Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three sons.

The family made their home on a farm south of Carleton and were members of Trinity Lutheran Church all their lives. The departed served as elder in this church for over 25 years.

In 1946 the departed and his wife retired to Deshler. In 1955 his wife passed away and the departed lived alone for a few years and then made his home with his son, Harvey. He was in comparatively good health until January of this year. He had spent the winter with his son, Herbert, at Norfolk and returned on Sunday, June 17, to make his home again with his son, Harvey. He took seriously ill the following Saturday, June 23, and was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Hebron and on Wednesday morning, June 27 at 4:15 o’clock the Lord in His wisdom saw fit to take him to the eternal home in heaven. He reached the age of 78 years, 9 months, and 14 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Degner, and two sisters.

He leaves to mourn his passing: three sons, Herbert of Norfolk, Robert of Sylvan Grove, Kans., and Harvey of Carleton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred of Carleton and Karl of Hebron; two sisters, Mathilda and Ida Degner of Hebron; and a number of other relatives and friends.
