Lives in MN in 1820's or 1830's. (Mary Iciyapiwin affidavits state Charles knew her since they were children. Mary was born in MN in 1816.)
1853- lived at/near Traverse des Sioux (Old Traverse des Sioux by Thomas Hughes, page 162)
1854- Outing with Little Crow. Has wife and two children, not named. (Word Carrier- May, 1887)
1856- Lake Pepin doc.- Lived at the mouth of the Cottonwood in Minn. Terry. New Ulm area? Wife not named. Two children- John age six and Charles Jr. age 2. Charles Mitchell states he is a white man, married to a full blood Mdewakanton woman. (Here he states he was about 36 years old last June.)
1862-1864- Was a Renville Ranger. (Elrod's list of Scouts, Fortier's list of Renville Rangers, Lowthian's list of Renville Rangers) Served with the 10th MN Infantry as a Private. Was present at Camp Release, working as a cook for the soldiers. (Letter from Lower Sioux Agency 1896)
1865 County census- Lived in Mendota, Dakota County, MN. Wife Eliz. Three children, Charles, George, Emily (Millie).
1870 Federal census- Lived at Granite Falls, Chippewa County, MN.
Charles, wife is listed as Millie. (error?) Children are-
1873- Daughter Millie married to Fred LaCroix at Hawk Creek, Renville County, MN.
1874- First appeared on the Santee Indian Census. Lived alone. Age 60. (?) Member of Husasa's band.
1877- Acted as official interpreter for the Santee on signing of the Treaty of 1877.
1880 Federal Census- Lived at Santee. Widowed. Age 61.
1882- Acted as official interpreter for the Santee on signing of the Treaty of 1882.
1883- Supreme Court Case- United States vs. Mitchell
1885- Appears on the Census of Santee Indians. Lives alone. Age 66.
1890- Surviving Soldiers Census. Served from 1862 to 1864. Resides at Santee.
1894- the last year Charles appears on the Santee Indian census. Age 75.
Feb. 11, 1895 died at Bazille Creek, Knox County, NE. Buried Feb. 13 at Blessed Redeemer.
Charles is listed as ‘white" on all documents. However, he had an allotment number in 1874, received an allotment of land, had an Indian name, Tahanse, and appeared on all Santee Indian Censuses.
