Sharon Kaye Peck
Sharon Kaye Peck of Lincoln, formerly of North Platte, died June 17, 2004. She was 64. She was born March 3, 1940, in Hastings to Ralph E. and Lucille Olsen George.
Mrs. Peck helped establish The Learning Center, North Platte Public Schools' alternative high school, in 1991. In the 10 years she taught in the school, nearly 100 students received a second chance to graduate from high school. She taught middle school and high school French and English classes in Kearney, Hastings and North Platte Schools. She retired in 2001 after 35 years of teaching, with 29 of those years in the North Platte School System. She was recognized in 2001 with the Women of Achievement Award, presented by the Community Improvement Committee of the North Platte Area Chamber of Commerce, in the field of education.
She was named to Who's Who Among American Teachers and served as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life co-chairwoman. She was named a Beta Sigma Phi International First Lady of the Year and served on the University of Nebraska at Kearney Alumni Association board of directors from 2000 to 2003. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church and Daughters of the King. Surviving her are two daughters, Alison K. (Harlan) Jones of Frisco, Texas, and Hillary A. (Paul) Dodson of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Trevor and Ryan Jones and Parker Dodson; a sister Maxine (Roger) Johnson of Lincoln; and a brother, Warren George of Colorado. Her husband Phillip and her parents preceded her in death. Memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center in North Platte, North Platte Public Schools Foundation or the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte with the Rev. John Schaefer officiating. Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at the church. There was cremation and there will be no visitation. Roper and Sons Funeral Services in Lincoln is in charge.
