"SUSAN wife of H. JARVIS died Aug. 18, 1845 aged 62 years"
Not much is known of Susan. Susan was born in 1792/3 in probably TN or SC. She married Henry Jarvis on November 29, 1808 in Shelby County, KY. In the marriage record, her given name is Susannah.
Susan and Henry were the parents of three known children:
Rachel (Jarvis) Shelton or Carter b ~1812 KY
Caleb Jarvis b 10-17-1814 KY
William Ephraim Jarvis b ~1822 IN
In Caleb's 1880 census, he states that his mother was born in TN. In William's 1880 census, he states that his mother was born in SC.
There are two Rachel Jarvises that may likely be, but only one could be Henry and Susan's daughter. One married a John H. Carter in Kent Co., Delaware in 1830. This Carter family lived next to and had land transactions with Caleb and William E. Jarvis in Brownstown Twp., Jackson Co., IN in the 1830s and '40s. The Rachel Jarvis that is most-likely to be Henry and Susan's daughter, however, is a Rachel Jarvis that married "Henly Shelton" on July 15, 1834 in Jackson County, IN. What is very peculiar is that this Rachel Jarvis Shelton is also found (widowed) in 1860 Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA in 1860...near the same place as the other Rachel Jarvis Carter who was found there in 1856. There is definitley a connection there. These two Rachel Jarvises may have been cousins.
Caleb's 1884 obituary leads us to Shelbyville, KY, as it states that he "...was born October 17th, 1814, and came to this county (Jackson) from Shelbyville, Kentucky, upwards of fifty years ago".
All accounts show that Henry was born ~1786 in DE. Henry is found living with his son, William in the 1850 Brownstown Twp., Jackson Co., IN census. It's not been established yet, but Henry may have been living in Pleasant Twp., Wapello Co., Iowa with his possible daughter, Rachel Jarvis Carter in the 1856 Iowa state census.
Henry has not been found in the 1860 censuses. His possible daughter, Rachel (Jarvis)'s John H. Carter family, with whom he may have been living with in 1856 Iowa, has not been found in 1860 or 1870 either.
I am currently researching records locally in Jackson Co., IN. The next avenue of research would take us to Shelbyville, KY.
My relationship is that Henry and Susan were my gggg-grandparents.
