Charles H. Wells, the son of Harvey K. Wells and his first wife Catherine A. "Kittie" Crawford, was born in 1863. That was the year his mother died in Bullitt County, Kentucky. His father, Harvey K. Wells, was the son of William Wells and Elizabeth Schermerborn of Washington County, Kentucky. His mother, Catherine A. "Kittie" Crawford, was the daughter of John and Lydia (Harned) Crawford of Nelson County, Kentucky.

Charles was the brother of the following nine children born before the death of Kittie in 1863: Mary E., John H., who was the clerk of Hardin County Court in Elizabethtown; William H., Lydia S., wife of Charles Bunch; Benjamin, Franklin, Sallie, Kittie and Starling, the last four deceased before 1880 census of Grayson County, Kentucky.
