When 13 years of age he accompanied his parents and siblings to the United States and for some time lived in Saratoga Springs, new York. . In 1851, however, he came to Stark County, Illinois, and purchased one hundred and sizty acres of land in Valley township. he soon afterward returned to New York but the following year again visited Stark County. In 1853 he took up his residence here. He was a practial farmer, and his well directed labors yielded him a good income. He was highly esteemed in his community, and his death, which occurred in 1910, was the occasion of much grief. He was married in 1853, in New York, to Miss Jane Standish, a native of Saratoga Conty, and they became the parents of two children, Harvey and Joseph. The wife died in 1859 and in 1860 Mr Hodges was married to Mrs. Nancy Hutchinson, of Chillicothe, Ohio, by whom he had following children: Otis, Sherman,(twins) Frank W. and Fred W.
The last two named received a good education in the district schools and early became familiar with agricultural work. Since the death of their father they have engaged in farming independently under the name of Hodges Brothers.
