Sam C. McLendon, 88 years old, of Palm Beach, FL, died Monday, August 15, 2011 after an extended illness.
A native of northeast Georgia, Sam was the valedictorian of the Wilkes County (GA) High School, Class of 1939. He was an engineering graduate of Georgia Tech in 1943, then spent three years during World War II on a heavy cruiser and assault troop transport in the Pacific. He used his G.I. bill to get his engineering Masters Degree from Harvard University. He began his business career in Long Island, NY here he worked for a large water company for about ten years. He later became a partner and part owner of the consulting engineering firm, Holzmacher, McLendon and Murrell (later called H2M Group), where he was responsible for the design and operational tasks for many water systems on Long Island and a few in New Jersey. During his 35 years with H2M, he also bought two privately owned water companies and supervised their operation, eventually selling them. He also was director of H2M labs during it's early years.
Sam retired in 1991 and a year and a half later came to the Palm Beaches to play tennis and golf for the foreseeable future. He met his wife, Joyce on the Seaview tennis courts and they were married in 1994. In 1995 he was elected to the Town Council and then re-elected three more times without opposition and became the president pro-tempe of the council.
He was a member and Past President of the Royal Poinciana Chapel, and member of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, Palm Beach Rotary Club, Palm Beach Civic Association, Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews, Alexis de Toqueville Society of the Town of Palm Beach, and the United Way. He was a member of the Board of First United Bank as well as a member of the Olde Guard of Palm Beach Golfers, Harvard Club of the Palm Beaches, the Georgia Tech Club of the Palm Beaches and the Pundits. He was a receipient of the Hero of the Year Award by the 19th Hole Division of the American Cancer Society.

SERVICES: Memorial Services will be held at 11a on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Royal Poinciana Chapel with the Rev. Robert S. Norris, officiating. A private inurnment will take place in the Royal Poinciana Chapel Columbarium. QUATTLEBAUM FUNERAL HOME, 1201 S Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, is in charge of arrangements.
