Nicholas Lewis was the son of Owen and Sarah Perkins Lewis. He moved to Morgan Co, AL, and in July of 1818, filed on 3,013 acres located in Morgan and Madison counties of Alabama.
In May of 1820 he applied for a ferry license and began Lewis' Ferry operations. Lewis received a grant in May of 1828 from the United States of America for 160 acres for river improvement. This was the beginning of the development of Talucah Landing. Lewis owned a large warehouse and the first cotton gin at Talucah. He constructed a wooden chute to carry baled cotton from the warehouse to the docks below.
