Ian Harmon, age 88, of Glenwood, Minnesota, formerly of Villard, died on Tuesday at the Glenwood Village Care Center in Glenwood.
A service of remembrance will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2003, at the All Saints Chapel in the Glenwood Retirement Village with Chaplain James Gronewold officiating. Interment was in the Grove Lake Cemetery.
Ian F. Harmon was born to the parents Charles and Nellie (Elwood) Harmon on September 12, 1915, in Grove Lake. He met Pearl Baker at a grade school picnic when they were in their mid-teens. They were united in marriage five years later on April 3, 1936 in Glenwood at the Methodist parsonage. They farmed near Villard until the spring of 1949. He worked at the school as a custodian and drove school bus for many years. In 1956 they purchased and operated Harmon's Cash and Carry Grocery Store in Villard.
Ian was active in community organizations such as the city council and served as mayor for several years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding and showing horses. After their retirement they began spending the winter months in Yuma, Arizona.
Ian is survived by two children: Richard and wife Alice Harmon of Glenwood; Yvonne Brittin of Forada; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Jessie LeCount of Vancouver, Washington; Irene and husband "Swede" Nelson of Villard; Jean and husband Truman Bowen of Glenwood; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife: Pearl; step-mother: Marion Harmon; brothers: Roger, Donald and Willard; sisters: Florence Harmon and Dorothy Breese; and son-in-law: Emmett Brittin.
Memorials are preferred to the Pope County Hospice Program of the Glacial Ridge Health Systems and the All Saints Chapel fund.
Arrangements were with the Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood.
