William and Betsey married on 1 January 1854
at Dakota, Waushara, Wisconsin.
They were parents of seven children.
HISTORY OF RICHLAND TOWNSHIP:
William W. Beard was born in Kennebec County, Maine, where he attended schools
and lived on a farm. When 20 years old he went to sea and was a sailor for five years.
He then engaged in farming in Maine.
In 1855 William and Betsey came to Waushara County in Wisconsin where he staked out a claim, improved on it and built a house and barn.
In 1858 William came to Minnesota on a prospecting tour.
In 1862 he sold his farm in Wisconsin and came to Richland, where he bought a farm; improved his place and has since purchased 160 acres adjoining. The family lived in a
log house until 1868, then William erected their present frame house.
Mr. Beard has been elected to offices of trust in the town, and is a man that is well known in this section of the county.
