Elwain Robert Gibson

E. Robert (Bob) Gibson, 83, long time resident of Westport and Sauk Centre, left this earthly realm of the Broen Nursing Home in Fergus Falls, to join his beloved wife, Alma, on May 20, 2005. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 10, 2005, 1 p.m. at Sauk Centre United Methodist Church. E. Robert, the youngest of three children, was born on a farm between Sedan and Grove Lake. A product of the Great Depression, he was a robust, vital, generous man born Jan. 26, 1922. Even in those hard times he was able to graduate from Glenwood High School and attended the University of Minnesota for a short time. He was a rural letter carrier in the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years. In his 1990 autobiography, "The Way I Remember It," he describes how fortunate he was to have such an outdoor job in which he got to know so many wonderful people on his routes in the Westport, Villard and Sauk Centre areas. Very active in the Minnesota Rural Letter Carriers Association in the 50's, he rose to president of that organization. Always active in community projects, he helped form and lead the Westport Clippers 4-H club of Pope County. The various charity drives that he lead in the 50's, 60's & 70's are too numerous to list. Due to his gift of relating to teenagers, he was tapped continuously for chaperoning high school, church, 4-H and scouting events. Never owning a TV until he retired in 1983, his hobbies were second jobs to pay for annual mountain vacation trips and immaculately caring for his yard and garden. An avid reader, he was highly self-educated and became active in the Sauk Centre P.T.A. as a presiding officer to promote education. A deeply spiritual man, he was active at all and various levels of the Methodist Church: usher, Sunday school teacher, Methodist Youth Fellowship leader, lay leader and president of the church Men's Club. In the late 70's and 80's he spent every other complete weekend with his two grandsons, Mark and James, driving countless hours so they could grow and develop as young men with their father in Fergus Falls. He is survived by his sister, Lois (Joe) Berg, of Mankato. Also, his son, Dr. Robert J. Gibson of Fergus Falls, his daughter, Constance L. (Richard) Altenhoff, of Chicago, Il, grandsons Mark and James Gibson of Minneapolis, Tim Hayes of New York, NY, Patrick Hayes of Chicago, IL, and great granddaughter, Sky Gibson, daughter of Mark and Amy Gibson. Memorials preferred to Sauk Centre United Methodist Church.
