Custos of the Holy Land between 1998 and 2004, Father Giovanni Battistelli OFM., was born to Salvatore Battistelli and Attilia Cristofani in Spello, Perugia, Italy.

After studying at the Seraphic College of the Umbria Province he joined the Franciscan Order on August 13, 1951, at Amelio, Terni, and followed the Philosophy course at San Damiano, Assisi. He attended the theology course at the Porziuncola, Assisi, took his Solemn Vows in September 8, 1955, at the Porziuncola, and was ordained to the Priesthood by the then Patriarch of Jerusalem Monsignor Alberto Gori on June 29, 1960.

Battistelli pursued further studies at the Ateneo Istituto Pontificio Orientale in Rome between 1960 and 1963, obtaining a Licentiate in Oriental Sciences.

In 1963, he was assigned to the Centre for Oriental Studies in Cairo while in 1965, he started teaching at the school of Bulacco. From 1968 to 1973, he was assigned as Superior, Parish Priest and Spiritual Assistant for OFS at Bulacco, Cairo. During this period he kept his teaching practice at the Italian Lyceum of Kars el Nil. Between 1973 and 1978, he was assigned to Alexandria, Egypt, as Guardian, Parish Priest and Spiritual Assistant for OFS while teaching at the Italian school of Alexandria. Between 1978 and 1981, he was assigned to St. Saviour's in Jerusalem. During this time he fulfilled his duties as Member of the Council of the Custody of the Holy Land representing the Italian-speaking Friars, Secretary for Formation and Studies, Promoter of Vocations, Master of the Theology Students, Master of Ceremonies and Professor at the International Theological Study Centre of Jerusalem between 1981 and 1983. In 1981, he was named member of the Catholic Commission of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Between 1983 and 1986, still at St. Saviour's in Jerusalem, besides being a member of the Council of the Custody he was also director of "Casa Nova", Secretary for Formation and Studies, Promoter of Vocations and Master of Ceremonies. In 1986, he moved to Rome, at the Collegio Internazionale di Terra Santa, where he was assigned as Superior and Parish Priest.

By decree of the Holy See, Fr. Battistelli, was nominated asCustos of the Custody of the Holy Land, succeeding Fr. Giuseppe Nazzaro OFM., on April 4, 1998. During his term as Custos, he received Pope John Paul II in the Holy Places during the Pope's visit to the Holy Land in 2000, and also played an important role in the development of the Hebrew speaking Catholic communities in Israel.

Father Battistelli's term as Custos ended in 2004. He was succeeded by Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM.,

At the Chapter Congress which was held in the first half of August 2004, he was appointed to the Delegation of the Holy Land in Rome with the following offices: Delegate of the Father Custos for Italy, Guardian, Administrator of the Custody of the Holy Land and Director of the Pilgrimages Department. He left Jerusalem on August 16.

Father Giovanni passed unexpectedly away at the Convent of San Fortunato di Montefalco on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 16 pm., aged 77. His Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli, Assisi, on Saturday, October 22.
